BROKEN AXLE HALTS ATI CHARGE July 25, 2002 - Baltimore, MD ![]() The condensed one-day show leaves the ASA teams with no time to waste. It's practice, qualifying and then time to go racing all in about 8 hours. JC and the ATI Crew made multiple adjustments to the #09 all day trying to dial it in for the high banks. The adjustments proved to pay off as JC was on the move early in the Tecumseh 300. The ATI #09 looked to be shot out of a rocket as it passed several cars. Then around lap 20, JC thought he had a tire going down, but it turned out the #09 had a broken axle. It wasn't until the crew replaced a second axle about 60 laps into the race when they realized the snout was bent. Instead of parking it for the day, the crew replaced the snout and both axles giving JC an opportunity to get back in the race. He finished the day in 21st position and picked up 10 spots by finishing the race. Rookie David Stremme of South Bend (IN) passed Gary St. Amant on lap 296 to secure the lead and go on to capture the first win of his ASA career. It follows an amazing four consecutive runner-up finishes for the number 11 Meijer car. Also, the ASA points battle tightens as Joey Clanton's lead over Gary St. Amant is now only 59 points. The 2002 ASA Racing Series returns to action on Sunday, July 28 for the BFGoodrich Tires 300 at Madison International Speedway in Oregon, WI. The race will be televised live on TNN The National Network at 2:00PM EST. ![]() BACK |
