BEATTIE SALVAGES VALUABLE POINTS AFTER EARLY TANGLE AT LAKELAND
March 28, 2002 - Baltimore, MD

JC Beattie Jr and the ATI Performance Racing Team arrived in Lakeland, Florida confident in their ability to have a strong performance in the ASA season opener.

After a long off season of preparation and days testing at the track, JC and the rest of the crew were ready to get down to business.

During the first practice session on Saturday, the car developed some handling woes but was actually turning some pretty impressive lap times. JC and the crew went to work on the #09 Monte Carlo and made a few changes to correct the handling problem before qualifying.

In qualifying for the WJ Plemons Investments 200 Presented by Jani-King, JC picked up the pace and qualified just .3 seconds off the pole time, averaging a speed of 122.8 mph on this half-mile bullring. The ASA competitions is always tight and JC found himself starting 24th in a field of 35.

"We made a lot of changes before the race to the ATI Performance Products Black Magic #09" commented Beattie. "At the start of the race the car was not handling better or worse but just different and I was still trying to get a handle on it before we got caught up in that accident," said Beattie.

JC found himself behind a wreck early in the race and when he slowed to avoid the wreck the car behind him ran over the rear end of the ATI Performance Products #09. As a result of the accident, the car had a broken shock, twisted rear end and a damaged right side. The crew went back to work on pit road and did a great job in getting JC back out on the track to pick up some points. Despite their unfortunate luck, Beattie and ATI Performance Racing managed to pick up nine spots and finish 26th.

"The crew worked hard and we were able to stay out and pick up some valuable points," commented JC.

Joey Clanton took the lead on lap 43 and never looked back on route to winning the WJ Plemmons Investment 200 presented by Jani-King.

Next on the schedule, the ASA travels to Irwindale, CA for the BF Goodrich 300 on April 7, 2002 at 4PM EST on TNN.
